Joining Achieve More as a German volunteer
My name's Toni and I have had the honour of supporting this great organisation as part of my short-term volunteering service spanning two weeks in July 2019. As soon as I arrived in Glasgow after an extensive 15 hour journey, I received a very warm welcome from Ahmed, who'd sorted out my ways of transportation like a champ! The following Monday allowed me to catch a glimpse of the ongoing summer camp, leaving me a bit flabbergasted at the sheer
My volunteering journey
My name is James McGuire, I have been involved with Achieve More Scotland for the last 9 years. I was 16 years old when I first got involved playing for Possilpark in the Friday Night Football League. At the time I was also starting my 5th year at Secondary school and wasn’t 10% sure what I wanted to do as a career. This was when I first got introduced to the idea of volunteering, so I started to help organise
I was affected with body image when I was playing football constantly having to watch my weight
We finish #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek with a last testimony from one of our staff members who shares his experience and struggles with body image. How body Image affects men? I think body image affects men in different ways. Especially in society today with social media etc. Portrayed to have 6 packs and stuff which can lead to people being depressed anxious constantly. What can be done for men struggling with this? There is help out there to speak to people if they are struggling but I know that
Men/ boys going on holiday may be when they feel the most self- conscious
During #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek we also wanted to focus in the struggles that males go through when it comes to their bodies and appearance. To do so, we have interviewed Ryan, one of our staff members. How body Image affects men? I think body image can affect men as a lot of can be self-conscious and lose confidence in themselves if they don’t feel comfortable with themselves. What can be done for men struggling with this? I think they should have someone to speak to and for
Mainstream media still remains the biggest problem with real representation.
Today we interview Eve, one of the participants of our activities Why body image affects so many young woman/girls ? I think that body image affects so many young girls today because from a young age we are taught to look a specific way , the ideal “look” is incredibly unrealistic however when girls realise they don’t fit into that specific category of what’s beautiful , they start to believe that they are not worth it. Media Influences today is also a big factor, girls
This cross cultural learning experience is an invaluable life skill | Erasmus+

I had never travelled, let alone travelled for work alone so that was a big step for me
Kiera, Head of Dance for Achieve More Scotland has taken part in a youth worker training in Macedonia. In 2017 Kiera attended a 5-day training course with 30 other youth workers from across Europe to explore using dance to support young people at risk of offending. Kiera puts her Erasmus+ experience down to her growing maturity in her youth work practice that supports over 1000 girls and young women across the City of Glasgow each week. Since then, Kiera has supported 4 young women to take
Getting to go away to another country like Portugal was life changing to be honest
Les 22, from Springburn had his first Erasmus+ experience whilst he was unemployed and volunteering with Achieve More Scotland. Youth workers kept pointing out that Les spoke well to things that matter for young people and so he was offered the opportunity to go to Portugal for 1 week with 20 other young people from across Europe to discuss democracy and young people. It was the first time Les had been on a plane and the first time he had
The impact of Erasmus+
Ben, 20 from Springburn went to Madrid, Spain for 1 month as a sports coach. He was unemployed and needed support on his direction in life. In Madrid, he volunteered 4 days a week with 2 Spanish youth organisations, helping them to deliver football and coaching sessions. It was an opportunity for Ben to take stock of life and consider his next steps and future back in Glasgow. “It was an experience that I won’t forget. I wanted to go
I have a lot of fear if there is no Erasmus+
Erasmus+ gave me the confidence to support young people when they experience transforming life experiences and develop their views on the world, and for that I have become a better youth worker who wants to dedicate his time to Glasgow communities.
